Throughout October, to celebrate Black History Month, students at Easington Academy took part in a competition which saw some fantastic pieces of writing and artwork being produced!

Students were tasked with creating pieces which celebrated the contributions of those from African and Afro-Caribbean backgrounds to the UK throughout history. The judges were most impressed by Sarah in Year 9 and Molly in Year 8 who both produced artwork for their entries.

Sarah commented: "My artwork is made up of a large number of significant figures throughout black history, to spell the word 'slavery'. The 'e' is black because it contains a list of some of the black people killed due to police brutality, contributing to the recent protests."

Molly produced a collage with current influential figures such as Marcus Rashford. The collage also included the famous Martin Luther King Jr. quote "The time is always right to do what is right". Molly also planned and created a lesson for younger children which included studying significant black figures from history and listening to the children's audiobook, Sulwe.

Both students received their prizes which included David Olusoga's new book Black and British: A Short, Essential History.

Miss Cullen, History and Geography teacher at the Academy, commented: "I'm very proud of Molly and Sarah's thoughtful entries. It was fantastic to see them embrace the opportunity to broaden their historical knowledge and be creative. I hope they enjoy the book and their chocolate!"

Well done students!
